actually sand is made of a wide variety of different rocks. The sand that is orangey-yellow is mostly made from the rock quartz. Glass is made by the sand mostly made of quartz, hence glass amd quartz both have the same properties. Different sand have different properties. The gravel also have some silicates. I wouldent think this would effect algae and i would think low nitrates would be a good think. BTW do you have any placo's or an other type of algae eater in your aquarium.
