Scarlett, sounds like you've got an amazing buy with this set-up. The filter system sounds amazing. The mesh is, no doubt one of the mythical gravel tidies. The idea is to place a good layer of substrate over your U/G filter plate, then the tidy, then another layer of substrate. When the little darlings go digging, they can't expose the filter plate, creating an easy route for the water,thereby bypassing the bacteria in the substrate.
