Malnourished Loach welfare cases

Does anybody have any experiences with bringing skinny (not kuhli loach skinny, "bony" skinny), gaunt loaches back to health? Do they have intestinal parasites? Would metronidazole help?
I know you should not buy unhealthy loaches as a rule, but I wanted to make sure that I had a group of these two unusual botia types that I found. The three plump (two superciliarus and a unknown leptobotia?), healthy ones have thrived, but the three "bony" ones have fared poorly. I have one gaunt superciliarus loach left and it looks depressed, not very active while it's two conspecific peers play and have fun.
