I don't think the clowns care directly how deep the aquarium is - they pretty much stick to the bottom anyway. You definately want to get as big a tank as your space and budget allow - the larger the tank the easier it is to maintain.

But, if you're debating between two tanks with the same "footprint", remember that more water volume means more stable water chemistry. So that extra 10 gallons straight up doesn't give the clowns any more living space, but will help keep the water consistant. OTOH, the surface is where gas exchange takes pla
