Rocks (ooh, what a thrilling subject!)

I am kind of confused on what is, and what is not safe for aquarium use, can you use "Wild" rocks that you just find (other than 'dissolving' rocks like sandstone), or is there a pollution possibility by using those kinds of rocks? Also, I live on a river, would rocks that I collect out of the river be unsafe for my aquarium, or would they be alright? Thank you for your time, Thad
