Yes, philodendron is toxic to animals. So, would not try it in the tank. Just a good aquatic plant would work, wouldn't it??? Like you, I do the fake ones since I tend to stress enought about the fish to worry about plants too! But, there ae some hardy ones out there. Have you ever tried "Prime" in your tank? I use it as a de-clorinator, but it also takes care of nitrites and nitrates.
