I would go the natural way, too, plants and water changes. I don't like putting chemicals in my tanks either. I do use this stuff (Prime) as a declorinator since I use water directly from the tap when I change my tanks. I just remembered seeing on the bottle that it said something about nitrites and nitrates. After looking at the bottle, it states it detoxifies them, so it does not remove them.
