Don't use tablets! They are ok if you plan to use them quickly after you get them, but they dont' last long. My dad's old ones fell apart after about 3 or 4 weeks. I have some nitrIte testing drops from Tetra that work great. About $8 for 50 tests unless you order them somewhere cheep or something. It works in full range I found out when I was cycling my tank the fishless way with adding amonia and planting it with rocks from my other tank. Besides it measures in cc's and that is a fun way to say cubic centimeters!:-).
