Sad Story ;( /New Loach/Sand Subtrate

Well i am sad to say taht my prized (and personal favorite) Botia juped out of my tank last night and sriveled into an unrecognizable scrap...:( :( :(. I hated it because i loved this fish so much. But I just adore loaches so i have to get a replacement. I was thinking mabe that ui could go with the orange-finned botia/blue botia. Any experiences with these? Temperment? any comments? Also i am going to upgrade to a 29 gallon and i was wondering if a sand substrate would be the way to go??? I know loaches like sand but i have other tropical fish like tiger barbs, a rainbowfish, and a red-finned shark(which will make a great companion with the loach because of the similar coloring) Is sand easy to maintain? Does it provide good biological filtration?
