Networking PVC pipes for clowns

I read somewhere in this forum about networking PVC pipes in the gravel for clowns to swim in. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I cannot remember who it was that had done this. What shape should i make the PVC pipes in in the aquarium (29 gal 30W X 12.5L X 18.5H) where should the openings be for them to come out and in. Any other infor on setting them up will be helpful, THANX
