Clown Loach Question

As I have said, I have 3 clowns that I got yesterday and they are all still doing great. No sign of disease brought in!! When i first put them in, I had no caves but a well planted portion of the tank. They were very active and always moving. Last night, after they had been in there for a while, I built two caves from some 1 3/4 in plastic water pipe and they rarley come out. I want to take the caves out so I can see them more becuse they are very pretty, but I know clowns like caves and places to go. Is the planted portion enough or do they HAVE to have the caves??? They seemed to do fine befor I put them in. Also, the two bigger clowns' stripes are just a little faded and are kind-of grey, but the smaller one has very definite black stripes. Is this somehting that comes with age or size?? Any infor on this will be very appreciative because I am eager to learn about these since I have never had any of these before.
