What about changing the tank conditions to the taste of the loach? Cichlids are much tougher than loaches, so why not take the ph down to about 7 or so, and keep the water at avg. hardness? I'll bet that they would all do well...it's just that the cichlids probably won't breed since it is not "ideal" conditions. On the aggression factor, it probably depends on what cichlid you get. I don't know much about many of the species, but I do know that brichardi are pretty calm compared to some other species. How about kribs? They are from africa(although not any rift lake)right? They have similar conditions to loaches, right? Well anyways, I think that an angelfish is probably at least as aggressive as a brichardi, but nowhere near some of the other species.
