I don't think African's would die in that kind of environment. I have been to pet stores where very healthy cichlids were being kept in the same water as in ever tank: Soft water, ph 7.0. Many fish stores do this(except for most privately owned ones)because it can be generally used for any fish. I think the water conditions could go either way where clowns could go in the african's conditions, and the africans could go in the clown's conditions. Maybe a mixture like hard water, 7.0 ph would work best. I used to use that on my tanks because I didn't want to add sodium to the water from the softener, so I used water out of the hose. I did have clowns, a yoyo, angelfish, and south american tetras which were all soft water fish. My angel lived in those conditions and grew to a size of somewhere around 5 inches, before I gave him up to someone else because I didn't have room to keep him. I still say that if you get relatively mild mannered cichlids, but still tough cichlids, that you would most likely be okay. The only thing I can think of that would make a difference is if the clowns were tiny(under an inch) and the cichlids were already big(around 4") when you first put them together.
