My answer to the first question in this thread is another question: "What type of african cichlids are we talking about here?". The original message stated 3.5 inches max so we could be talking about riverine cichlids but the population density (8 in a 29G) implies rift lake. In that case we'd have to derive that we're also talking about the mbuna or rock dwelling cichlids as opposed to the open-water dwelling haplochromines, so the answer
