Bloodworms

are raised in a slurry of chicken poop in China. According to Hikari, they put theirs through a 'three step sterilization process' (whatever that means). I stay away from the other brands because some of them really smell nasty (like s**t) and the quality is just not there. Some of these 'no name' brand ones may have been raised in human feces as far as we know. Yuk. The packages usually contain too many 'white' bloodworms or ones that died before freezing. The San Francisco brand bloodworms are huge and tough. I wonder if they really are bloodworms. They've got visible bristles for heaven's sake. My fish don't like them.
Given the fact that birds, such as chickens and ducks, are vectors for influenza and other viral infections that also make us sick, maybe this 'three step sterilization' is a good idea. Also, that could explain the black spot business. It's possible that the eggs of these worms don't get killed by just freezing them.
It all boils down to quality. Feeding fish the cheap stuff is not always in their best interests. As with our own food, my motto is 'if in doubt, throw it out'.
