About jumping the gun as to speak. Normally the male will gaurd the eggs from the female and the female will try to gobble them up. I remove her as soon as the eggs are laid. Or the female will get trashed. She just spent a great load of energy in producing all of those eggs. I normally try to feed her a high protein diet before and after breeding. Uh.... also, with the fry, as soon as they are born you can remove the male, he tends to gobble a few up also. I have found that feeding the fry some beef heart and chicken livers helps quite a bit, but they mess up the tank really quickly.

Good luck, I am personally fond of the short finned ones. I have one with an almost black body and his fins have a beautiful green then blue then red strip around the outside. I like the female color pattern also, but I hate destroying some of the fish that I raised. But the deformed and stunted ones shouldn't be allowed to reproduce or else their bad traits might carry on, like natural selection. Such is life and death in the animal world.
