1. Good stable water conditions and regular changes - pH, kH, gH, zero NitrItes and good Nitrate levels
2. Innumerable hiding places - rocks, caves, wood, plants
3. Compatible in size and behaviour co-habitants
4. Reasonable flow of water from pump, not a jet stream but not a trickle either
5. Good varied food
6. Enough space to swim
7. No cat pouncing on the hood (stop that Tequila!) and no kids (feline or otherwise) knocking on the glass
8. No medicines being chucked in on the off chance that illness might, could, would, should occur
9. No unreasonable chasing with nets or other implements
10. Good water conditions again, and again and again. We don't keep fish, we keep water :)
