Just as an aside, when I bought my tank complete with stand, the lfs guy through in a piece of styrofoam cut to size already. I don't think the tank needs it, but since I'd got it I used it.

As Mickie says, it's usually just as a precaution for cupboards and the like being used as stands which are not actually fabricated to be stands.
