Until it's proven otherwise then there's always the possibility that the spines have other uses as well as for defence. I have a rainbow right this moment with a 1cm gash in its side which I have no doubt in believing was caused by a botia spine. Maybe it got a little too close to the bloodworms at feeding time and got accidentally stabbed... or maybe it was deliberately attacked.

I have no idea. I do however know for a fact that my hymenophysas have killed and eaten two Mel. Boesemani in the past month. I think I mentioned it before but on both occassions the rainbows were happily spawning when I left for work and when I returned home they were just heads and a few ragged remains, and the hymenophysas were all fat like they'd just eaten an overdose of worms or something. Now if these rainbows were sick and dying to start with I'd be more sceptical but they were both in perfect health when I last set eyes on them. They can only have been killed in cold blood but I don't know if the spines were used or not...
