Doah.. Revalation. If a heater includes suction cups for mounting then it is submersable. I doubt any manufacturer would chance the suction cups failing. Why did I not think of that earlier :)

As to softening up the hard suction cups ..I would have tried boiling as you suggested. I really do not rely on them except for mounting heaters, and to keep ailine in place in a few tanks ..and maybe a powerhead or two. There are replacements that run less then 2 dollar
