Are horse-faced loaches social critters?

I ask this because I know that the clowns and kuhli loaches are, and I definitely want happy fish! My horsefaced loach has been hiding so much recently that it's almost like he isn't there! I removed a little shark who was causing trouble, and hoped that the new, peaceful atmoshpere would lure him out of the sand but it hasn't. He didn't even come out for the squished snails! Does anyone have any advice? How long is 'normal' for them to stay under the substrate? And if I get other horsefaced loaches, will he be pleased or irked at the competition? Thanks, loach lovers!
