Carbon and plants

Been reading a thread in another forum about carbon and plants and additives. Thought I'd come back and ask you guys what you use or do not use in your planted tanks. I have carbon in my loach tank clearing up the yellow water from the mopani wood. Some of the plants in that tank are doing well and some are rapidly dying. I am using a biofilter- what can I do to help the plants and still keep the loaches safe and happy?
