They can burrow but it is more likely that he either found a really good hiding place or if you have a hang on power filter you may want to check the box portion of the filter. Many have been found in the filter box as they swim upstream and jump into the filter. Just the gap at the rear of the hood for the water return can be enough for him to fit through. The good news is that most that have been discovered in the filter box have been found alive and healthy even after a couple of days.
