Hello, I recently installed a dual lighted flourescent aquarium hood to my 55 gallon freshwater tank. I mixed the bulbs, both 40 watt Coral life brands, one 50/50 nat daylight/ 03 blue , the other a hi- intensity daylight w/ color enhancers. To me the light doesn't appear all that much brighter than my old single tube hood, but apparently something is going on. I have some plants in there, mostly amazon sword, crypt, and java fern, and instead of those plants showing any good response, I'm getting MONSTER algae, the kind that looks hairy and is difficult to remove from my driftwood. Also, getting brown stuff and a bit of white stuff. I'm changing the water as usual; and I'm going to test the water as soon as I get up from the computer. I don't have a timer, so occasionally the light stays on all night, but rarely. Any ideas on what to do? I'm pretty much resigned to the idea of breaking it all down for a good scrub, but would like any ideas on a chemical that would not harm my loaches, I have 5 clowns. The change in light is the only thing I can point to for the sudden algae growth, all other factors seem to be the same. Thanks in advance.
