Herm; Sorry about your loss. While I don't have any explanation for the leap, I do have a method that might prevent further jumps. I have a tank with aquatic frogs, and recently had one escape, which is extremely rare. I found a product called Plastic Canvas. It comes in 10.5" x13.5" sheets, and is used in needle point or something like that. You can find it in craft stores or craft dept. of discount stores. I paid only $.25 per sheet.
