This is a bit of a stretch compared to the other excellent suggestions, but I'll give it nontheless as a brainstorming thought....

I'm using plastic plants in my daughter's 20 gal aquarium. I've discovered some cloth-like plastic plants that we're using in there...including floating lily pads. They come in different sizes, from (guessing here) 5" across to 2". If one didn't wish to cover or plug up a small opening in the top, and didn't mind plastic plants, why not secure one of these just under the opening?
