Kuhlis and Eheim prefilter

Has anyone used an Eheim prefilter in a tank with Kuhlis? I have plant tank that is currently loachless and would like to add a group of kuhlis to it. It is very heavily planted with lots of hidey holes and caves. But I don't want to add them if they are going to be hurt and it looks like they MAY be able to get through it. It looks like I may need to add a preprefilter.
