question about feeding veggies

I've never fed my loaches raw veggies before. Can someone explain the process please? I cut up some zuchinni, and put them in the tank. Not only did my fish not care, but something happened that I hadn't thought about. THEY FLOAT! Is there some technique like maybe soaking them so they sink? Does it matter? Thanks for your time. Steve
