The H.O.T. Magnums work well if you are going to use it on one tank only, or only use it occasionally. If you want a simpler diatom/micron filter check out the System1 by Vortex. They make a hang on tank model that works great. It has fewer parts to fool with than the Magnum and is easy to transfer from tank to tank. After ruining two H.O.T. Magnums, I switched to the Vortex and have not had any problems with it. They are more expensive but will last longer under heavy use. They also have a great support and service company. After using the Vortex, I would'nt even consider another type of micron filter. The Whisper Diatomagic is junk in my opinion. It has little flow and capacity.
It is also fun to watch my clowns play in the heavy current of the System1. Just trying to stay a little on topic.
