Hi Guys,
Iris, try silica sand - the grains are much coarser than silver sand (about 0.5-0.75mm guestimate) - I've got silica sand in with my kuhlis, and I've had no problems at all - the poop sits on top, and it's a breeze to vacuum it off during a water change. I've used about 1.5cm depth all round, and I wouldn't really recommend going much deeper as I'd imagine it'd start to go anaerobic. I'll be swapping the substrate in my 50G from silver to silica sand soon, as I'm starting to get a few green patches developing against the glass.
HTH,
Steve
