Hey Joe, that sand mixture sounds like an oil spill on a golden sand beach :-) j/k.
I had some black sand once in my first loach tank about 6 years ago but I can't remember what it was called. All I know is that it was bloody expensive. These days I use regular play sand and I haven't noticed the problem of it becoming supsended in the water like Iris mentioned. IME it only lifts a couple of inches when a loach does a particularly brutal tail-flick to get under a rock then it settles back down again.
I'm not particularly careful when I do my water changes so I invariably end up syphoning out some sand each time but when the glass starts to show I just throw in a couple of handfuls of fresh sand.
