I think that Clowns (especially at a smaller size) are just a little more difficult to care for than most other fish offered for sale at LFSs. It doesn't surprise me that the employee stated that "half end up dead." Clowns are especially sensitive to poor water quality, and many folks may not be aware of actually how much pollutants they have in their tank(s). That's a bad mixture.

Someone told you that the Clowns in SCal were healthier? Maybe she/he knows something (insider information)? Where's Ken Childs when you need him?! :-)

Are you close to Sacramento itself? I always thought that Capital Aquarium was a top notch store when I lived there for a while. If you have a store like that around, count yourself blessed!!! :-)

Still on vacation!!! :-)
