Kuhli loaches and power filter

Hi!

I found this forum trying to find the solution for my problem: I have had two kuhlis sucked up to the AquaClear 200 intake tube. One got in only his tail and I immediately turned the filter off, but died the same evening. I put a piece of loose fabric around - but in a couple days algae grew in there and filter was not really working after that. So, I took it off, hoping, that that loach was sick (that happened in the first minute after I released him to the tank...) Another one (yesterday) got sucked to the tube and died there...

Any solutions? Even smaller strainer? Home made one? Nylon mesh?
