Be sure not to use the rock floss that comes with some plant pots - the ones I am talking about here don't have it. The rock floss appears to have acted as a home for bacteria in one of my tanks, plus I wonder if it is really good for bottom-digging fish. I had a serious bacterial infection problem (lost all my cories, and my discus in that tank were under the weather all the time). When I removed all the rock floss from that tank (the only tank that had it), the problems cleared up - after I had tried lots of water changes, salt, and medicine to no avail.

The pots I am talking about aren't the plastic ones with rock floss, they are the little urn-shaped terra cotta things that hold the roots together. I've only seen them from this one Canadian supplier. You just stick the whole thing into the gravel and the roots are held in place and the plant is weighed down while it proceeds to develop further into the gravel. I assume that if a loach upsets the plant, it is easy to stick it back in the gravel. I'm going to try them, myself, even though the plants cost a little more when they come in the terra cotta thingies. Looks like it would save plant money in the long run when you have digging fish.
