Loaches and zucchini - a question

Well, I got this nice, delicious organically grown zucchini, and nice person that I am, I decided to share it with my modestas.
Due to the hilarious post further down about giving loaches "something to do" by pulling the zucchini under the water, I didn't parboil it and just let it float.
I fed a little more sparingly otherwise, to encourage the loaches to try the new food, but 24 hours later it was still in the tank, untouched, soft, and smelly, so I removed it.
Does the parboiling do something to make the zucchini more appetizing, in addition to making it sink? Is there anything special I can do to encourage my loaches to try this new food?
Thanks all.
