Any suggestions on terracing substrate?

Well, I broke down and ordered a pile of plants for the 44 gal euro and the 30 gal gourami & loach tanks..trying to stay mostly in the SE Asia biotope.

I tried cutting the tank dividers into strips, but unless i do that and silicone it to the bottom , it doesn't survive the tank cleanings.

I'll be setting up 1 or 2 20's this weekend with some cories and pleco as a holding tank for the plants so that algae and snails (if contaminated) can be dealt with there.

The terracing is the major dilema right now-- HELP!!!! lol.
