kuhli loaches losing color

I have purchased several kuhli loaches recently for my aquarium. Two have lost some of their color (faded over several days) and then died. I am an inexperienced aquarium owner, and may have put fish in too soon (only had aquarium set up for a week before putting in fish because I didn't know any better.) Has anyone else had this problem? I would appreciate your help.
