Question regarding Veggies

In the almanac it says to leave the skin on the vegetables. What about all the wax and other garbage on them. Is there a successful way to ensure all chemicals are washed off? Or should I be buying organic produce? ACK! My husband will kill me as I raise the monthly budget for the pets.
