Hi Fran,

Sounds like he's coming of age and making his claim to fame, or is that dominance? :-) While it's usually the largest individuals who'll spar for the right to be King it's not unknown for the smaller guys to get ideas above their station and attempt to move up the hierarchy. You may find he'll put on a growth spurt now and catch up, and maybe even outgrow, the middle guy.
