Yes. Totally safe. For the reason you told your Mom.

If you cut pieces to length and are worried about sharp edges, sand them (PVC sands to a nice smoothness) and then rinse them really, really well to get the sand and any other dust off of them. Obviously, use fresh, fine-grade sandpaper that hasn't been used for something else!

If you glue pieces together, be sure to use *aquarium safe* silicone.

If you're worried about any imprinted numbers, etc. on the pieces, just sand those off, too.
