kissing loaches?

I have two clown loaches (~3 inches long) in a community aquarium about 8 months old. Recently, the loaches have started to lock lips and it appears as if they are fighting, but no harm is ever done. I have looked for descriptions of this behaviour all over, but to no avail. Are they fighting, mating, or just playing. any info would be great.
