Balling of Kuhlie Loaches

I have read somewhere that if you had a bunch of Kuhlie Loaches together, they would sometimes "ball up". I would very much like to see this. Has anyone witnessed this glorious event?

And while I'm at it, could you tell me what the best substrate is for Kuhlie Loaches. I have heard they like to dig and bury themselves.... should it be sand or a finer type of gravel?
