Why have you choosen a canister filter over a simple hang-on power filter for your needs? I've been debating this myself, though I already have a Penguin 330 waiting for my 55-gallon.

As far as input goes, I personally gravitate towards spending the extra dollars on the best quality product, and saving money in the long run by never having to replace it. My application of this mass-induced attraction varies, however. :-) Just my $.02.
