I cannot advise on Khulis and sand, but I can say that sand is a double-edged sword, though I personally prefer it. It doesn't hold nutrients well, I'm told, though my amazon swords are doing okay in it. It will shoot right up your gravel vacuum, too. Those are the cons.

The pros are that if you get black sand, you can really easily spot feces, etc, and you can vacuum it all up by simply running the filter close to the surface; the lighter debris goes up, though it takes some practice.
