Making a slow recovery from a loach fatality

Hello everyone,

We haven't posted for a while and we wanted to let you know we're alive. About a week ago our largest and most colorful clown (Linus) was found belly up. I cried for the rest of the day and we gave him a proper funeral. Ever since then the school hasn't been the same with out their late leader. They aren't packed up and they don't do the wag in unison (only the striatas and yoyos do). I have been hesitant about posting but, i believe that there are a good many people here who know what we are going thru. We waited eight months to acquire Linus and now he's gone :~(

Anyways, the rest of the loach family is doing fine, that is the thing that has been bugging us. We were trying to soften the water gradually by taking out a piece of tufta rock a week and for some reason it caused a pH crash from 7 to 6 in approx 2 weeks. We had been removing this rock for 2 months now and testing every week to two weeks. This is the only thing we suspect could have happened but, why the leader of the pack and none of our smaller loaches or our eels which are very sensitive to pH below 7?

Linus was very strong, hearty, and beautiful and he will be missed by all(sigh).

Thank goodness for the rest of our family.

Very Sad Parents: Suzanne & Mark
