As I understand it, a boss loach can easily be a female - since the position is based mostly on size and determination. In fact, since female loaches have more girth, the balance may actually tip in favor of female bosses. That seems to be the case with my modestas, assuming I have guessed their gender correctly.

Occasionally alpha discus are females, too, although males are typically a little bigger. I guess it doesn't matter so much in a species where the parents equally share raising the young and chasing off the threats, unlike some cichlid species where the jobs are more clearly defined.

Iris - I don't care who's boss as long as the boss does a good job :-)
