Acid Tanks

So I have a 45 gallon tank that is tall (I guess about 24 inches) and I have gold fish and Shibunkins in it. About 6 of each. Went upstairs one day and found 2 dead Shibunkins. Tested the water: Nitrites: 0 ...pH <5 (probably off the scale). The tank has a fluval on it working perfectly and a sponge filter and an airstone with a piece of driftwood (being used for years)and some pieces of slate.
So I changed 2" of water with standing water I keep in a bucket. I also lowered the water level about 1 and 1/2 inches thinking that the surface area ratio wasn't encouraging enough oxygenation. I didn't feed the fish for 2 days. Tested the water again: looked a little better but the pH was still pretty low. Next day, one dead goldfish. And one large goldfish had ich on his tail. Depressed looking. One cloudy eye. So I repeated the process: changed 2" of water with 24 hour old treated standing water. Tested the pH again, i
