Live Plants and Graval Vac

I've never really got a clear answer on this subject, so I thought I would ask here. I currently have a 30 gallon tank with live plants (lots of live plants, no plastic). It was to my understanding that with live plants you don't really need to bother with vacing the gravel in your tank, as the plants will take care of the filth. I have a friend that has kept this method for over a year with no ill effects, and thus far I have been doing well. Is this just a myth? Should I still be concerned with vacing my gravel?
Normally I just do a 10-15% water change every 7-10 days and prune my plants. If anyone has more of an informed view on this I would really appreciate this.
