Hillstream Color changing?

I've had what the LFS sold as just a "Hillstream Loach" for a couple of months. It most closely resembles the "Lizard Loach/Green Hillstream Loach" at http://www.loaches.com/lizard_loach.shtml I recently purchased a friend for him (and two Hillstreams for my wifes tank). When we moved them from quarantine I was surprised to watch what had been a light colored fish suddenly turn dark. Originally we attributed it to stress but since then have noticed they seem to be mimicking their surroundings. They will be dark when against the dark backdrop (or a piece of driftwood), then almost loose all their darker color when on the gravel substrate. I was wondering is this indicative behavior of all hillstreams or something unique to a family.
