What's with my clowns?

I've had these fish for 4 and 3 years respectively. The largest two are pretty big and resemble Sherman, the shark from the comic strip in the newspaper. They have major guts on them.

Anyway, up until the late summer of 2000 they all inhabited a very heavily planted tank and I had no troubles with them whatsoever. Then I did some heavy duty pruning and 'gardening' in the tank to thin the plantation because I could no longer see my fish for all the plants.

What happened? The clowns decided they also wanted to do something about the plants and have managed to wipe out almost all my Cryptocoryne wendtii, balansae and beckettii. They weren't actually eating them. They'd bite the leaves off at the stem ends.

These fish are being destructive for the sake of being bad. They get fed veggies on a regular basis so it's not as though they are suffering a nutritional deficiency.
